Best Sweet Potato Soup with Exciting Moroccan Flavors! Made with Basic Healthy Ingredients Once you taste it it will be a go to recipe to use up those sweet potatoes sitting in your pantry! Saute onion and carrot 4 minutes.

Add garlic and ginger and saute 1 minute. Add remaining 1 Tbsp olive oil and spices. I opted to omit the cinnamon and added extra cayenne because I like heat.

It was a hit with the whole family and paired perfectly with a toasted gluten free baguette. Thank you for the wonderful recipe! It looks like it takes just as long in the instapot considering pressurizing and depressurizing time compared to the stovetop. Is there other benefit to the instapot compared to the stovetop?

Hi, the Instant Pot is more hands-off, while the stovetop requires occasionally stirring. The other bonus of the Instant Pot is the keep warm function, which means you can make it a few hours in advance and then enjoy when ready. Hope that helps!

What a great side dish! I paired this with some crispy pan-fried gnocchi and a mixed green salad for the perfect cozy fall meal. Thanks for this recipe, MB! I tend to be generous with spice as well as with my timing carmelizing onions etc.

I think you have lots of great recipes that only get better with a few extra minutes at these steps! And love your tweaks to our recipes. Thank you so much for sharing and for your support over the years! It would be great to know which ones are suitable for home freezing. Thank you!

Hi Kylie, They should, but just increase the pressure cook time by 5 minutes 10 minutes total. Let us know if you try! I just made this soup for lunch. I left out the milk and maple syrup, increasing the spice.

It was amazing. Thank you for this great recipe. It will become a staple in our home. Such a warming, tasty soup. I follow the recipe as is, opting not to add the optional cloves and maple syrup. Hi Rachel, it might be good without, since there is ginger and other spices.

Let us know how it goes! Maybe only puree half? Leaving some chunks. Does that substitution sound like it would work? Hi Jody, that should work! The squash might need to go in later as it will soften much faster than potatoes. I love that you can make it a little hotter or not according to your preference.

Wonderful soup. Thanks :. Thankyou so much! trying out so many different recommended spice mixes.. your recipe is our favourite so far. and did add some extra chilli flakes and squeezed lemon and leftover coriander at the end just for our taste. So delighted to find your recipes.

Happy New Year 😊. We loved it. I left the potato skins on and it came out fine. I made this soup and it is lovely. I used cumin and turmeric instead of cinnamon and cayenne and left out the cloves. I had planned to use the coconut milk but tasted it before I added and it did not need it , it was delicious on its own.

I have used many of your recipes and not been disappointed so far thank you. Super quick, easy, and absolutely delicious!!!! Hubby even loved it! Turned out amazing on this cold winter night in London.

Pinning this as a easy go-to for those winter days. Thanks so much for the lovely review! Easy and delicious! I also added some loosely torn up fresh spinach leaves in the bottom of the serving bowls before adding the hot soup, which was just right for the added texture of slightly wilted, bright green leaves.

Excellent meal for a rainy winter night! I made this on the stovetop in a le Creuset, added a teaspoon of garam masala and an extra shake of cayenne, and used a full can of coconut milk, because I think I used too much sweet potato, extra onion and extra fresh ginger.

I should have also added more lentils! I kept half the soup non-blended and we liked it that way. The toasted pepitas really brought the dish to the next level! They are worth the effort and easily toasted in a pan on the stove top.

The flavor is good but I wanted something a bit spicier so I added a good spoonful of hot curry paste. Very good with the pepitas and a swirl of coconut milk.

Possibly because my dried green lentils had been around for a while, the sweet potatoes were softer than I like by the time the lentils were cooked through.

If your lentils have been in your cupboard for a while, consider cutting the sweet potatoes a bit larger. I made this last month and froze the leftovers. Took it out of the freezer to almost defrost overnight. Sautéed ground beef and added the stew.

Mixing til combined and heated through. It was even better tho not vegan. All lentils can be used interchangeably.

Green ones hold their shape better than brown lentils which get soft and can be mashed. I only have brown ones which I will use when I make this soup. It sounds yummy.

There's a considerable difference in both size and volume between two lemons and two limes. I made this soup last night and it was SO GOOD!

I substituted the chard with fresh spinach since chard wasn't available in my grocery store. I stemmed the spinach and added the lemon juice, jalapeno slices, and salt as directed. It was just perfect on top of the soup. This recipe is definitely a keeper. Made this last night, almost as written but with vegetable broth and water rather than just water.

Everything else the same. It was good, but not excellent. My kids did like it a lot, so that's a win, and it was very easy to make. The quick-pickled chard stems and jalapeno was great.

I think if I make it again I'll use a larger sweet potato and leave more of the jalapeno seeds in. Anyway I think it's worth making because it's so incredibly quick and easy, even if it's a little bit underwhelming.

I made this yesterday, and the only thing I did different was use chicken broth instead of water. I like the depth of flavor and savoriness meat broths add to meatless soups. I put it in the fridge and forgot about it until tonight. It is fantastic!!! And I love the lemon juice marinated chad stems.

Extraordinarily delicious for the simplicity of the ingredients that it uses and quick to make for a soup. Zested the lemon before juicing it and added to the stems. Please explain "thinly slice the chard stems all the way to the leaves.

More cohesive sense: Strain the chard stems, add all of jalapeño-lemon juice to pot of soup. Top bowls with pickled stems. As suggested in the Cooking Notes, I used vegetable broth and I think using it instead of water contributed to the flavor.

I'd also add more jalapeños. Perhaps the one that I used wasn't hot enough for my family. Of perhaps a touch of cayenne pepper for increased heat. I made this substantially as written but waited 5 minutes after the broth and lentils before adding the sweet potato based on other comments.

The sweet potato still had a bit of firmness and was not too soft when lentils were finished. The quick-pickled chard stems or equivalent alternate are essential. Will definitely make it again. If you can handle some spice add green chiles from a can for a SW flavor or your favorite.

If no spice is desired, add smoked paprika. A little miso adds depth. I made this exactly according to the recipe and it was absolutely delicious!

Will definitely put it in rotation. A surprisingly light and fresh soup for a cold winter day. Using broth instead of water rounded the soup out a bit. A winner in our house. Wonderful depth of flavors. I replaced one of the cups of water with orange juice, for another citrus flavor. Really good! Followed the recipe with broth instead if water.

Crave able and delicious. Its my new go to winter soup. Easy and quick dinner! I added the zest of one of the lemon and ground coriander for more flavour. Will do again. This is delicious! Really wonderful as written but I am going to admit I did have to make two substitutions : one which was kale instead of chard.

Prepared the same way and added a wonderful toothsome bite to the overall soup. Second, I did sub in vegetable broth instead of water which again I believe has a little bit of extra dimension. Warm, wonderful and nicely balanced. Will make again! This was really good. I subbed baby spinach for the kale and squeezed lemon over the top for serving.

I like spicier food than my family does, so I used some jalapeño but also drizzled a bit of chile oil on mine for serving.

Sweet potato and lentil soup -

This sweet potato lentil soup makes a healthy and filling family meal that uses seasonal sweet potatoes and protein-packed lentils. They taste even better on the second day, and they freeze perfectly , too.

And for how flavorful and nourishing this sweet potato lentil soup is, this recipe is simpler than you might think.

Start by sautéing the diced veggies in olive oil, a classic step which builds flavor and nutrition. Then add garlic and sauté one minute more. Next, stir the rest of the ingredients and simmer until the lentils are tender.

This sweet potato lentil soup is it. Note: this is a quick description, the full recipe is at the bottom of the page. Olive oil or extra virgin olive oil: perfect to sauté the veggies and add flavor. Veggies: as usual also this soup recipe starts with sautéed onion, carrot, celery, and garlic.

This step adds savory depth of flavor, and more veggies to the pot! Lentils: brown or green lentils both work well in this recipe, adding earthy flavor and plant-based proteins. Make sure to rinse and drain them well before using in this recipe. Dried lentils are best, but canned are ok too if you wish.

Herbs: for convenience, we use dried basil, rosemary, thyme and bay leaf. Tomato paste: this is another must-have pantry staple that adds rich flavor and a touch of color.

Broth: I used low sodium vegetable broth, but feel free to use your favourite broth. In this case, adjust the seasoning accordingly since some broth can be quite salty. Ladle the soup into bowls and add freshly ground black pepper or a pinch of chili flakes if you like.

Would you recommend making it with the fresh cilantro vs the coriander? It will be quite a different flavor. the cilantro chinese parsley green parts make flowers which produce coriander seeds. now i have to buy some coriander to see if it tastes like cilantro!

Yummy… Enough said really! Hi Dana! I made this today and wow! It is truly delightful! Very light and fresh with lots of fall flavors. Made this for myself and a couple carnivores, but doubled the recipe…. and boy am I glad I did!

Definitely a keeper…Thanks Dana!! Made it shared it really loved it! Thanks a lot for being simply creative or should I say creatively simple?

Loved it, exactly as written! A perfect cozy fall and winter soup that makes the house smell wonderful while cooking!

Definitely will make again. Just made this for dinner. It was a hit! Easy to make and a nice mix of flavors. will make it again! I bought purple yams by mistake and this still turned out great!

Because I also used red lentils the soup is a very deep plum color. I used chard instead of green beans and a little less liquid. Flavor is amazing. As delicious and easy as promised!

And, only used half of the coconut sugar. My toddler loved it, too! This hit the spot. The cinnamon is a nice touch. I used turnip greens and they worked well. I made the recipe exactly as written, and chose chopped cilantro as a garnish. I really wanted to love this — I even doubled it in order to freeze some for easy lunches — but it was just ok.

In my opinion it lacks a kick of umami or something to brighten up the flavours. I wish I knew what that was. Maybe a spiced oil as a garnish? Some kind of acid? I was kinda hoping other reviewers would have commented on this too in order to get some ideas!

I do recommend serving with fresh garlic and parsley. Did you try that? Lemon juice might also be nice! Used green lentils soaked over nite, kale, maple syrup and a Japanese sweet potato red on the outside, white and sweet on the inside. Love your blog! Just made a pot of this comfy soup.

Used red lentils, honey as a sweetener, and chicken broth. Served over brown rice. Husband loved it, and for me it was a tad too sweet, so I added a little heat in the form of Huy Fong chilli garlic sauce.

I saw the recipe on Instagram and thought yum! I want that! Soaked green lentils immediately. Made the stew yesterday and replaced the green beans with shredded cabbage. Absolutely gorgeous! Even my sometimes fussy 8 year old loved it. Will definitely make it again. Thanks for sharing?

Next time would you mind adding a rating to your review? I made this recipe pretty much as written. A friend came by and had some with me.

We both love it. I shared the recipe with her. Made this tonight for my sick Husband and it was a big hit! I added some Kale for extra greens. Wonderful — thanks for sharing, Hayley!

Hope your husband feels better! I just made this and it was YUM! Only thing I added was a little liquid smoke for smokiness and lime juice balanced it out for me. Keep on with the soup recipes Dana!

So much fun playing with new ones this time of year. If we were to use frozen green beans, would you suggest thawing them first or adding them in the frozen state? Planning to make this soon! Thank you for all your hard work on these magnificent weekly recipes. I always look forward to receiving your emails.

This was so delicious, comforting, flavorsome… A big big hit! I love your recipes and would love to have an app. Would be happy to pay as well to support your work. I made this tonight and it was very good! I looked at your Moroccan spiced lentil recipe for cross reference and decided to add 2 tablespoons of tomato paste to the soup.

I also used canned brown lentils instead of dry lentils because I have had a difficult time finding them dry. I added them at the point I added the green beans. My husband and I both said the recipe will go into my permanent recipe notebook.

Made this tonight. Boiled 1 cup of green lentils instead of soaking. Added soaked previously dried shiitake mushrooms about Added a splash of Tamari and about 2 Tbs butter. Reduced coconut sugar to 1 Tbs. Otherwise, I followed the recipe. Thank you. Have you ever prepared in an instant pot?

This sound delicious. The NY Times published a version of this dish a few years ago. I do think the extra garlic, coriander, and turmeric would help improve upon it even more.

I highly recommend serving with a lime wedge as they suggest in the Times recipe — it really amps up the flavor.

Ah, good question. But, oil works well too and is actually our preferred! Maybe you can broaden your horizons Rj. It is not uncommon to saute veggies with water only. It so happened that I just recently switched from a life-time of sauteing with oil to using just water.

I was about to acknowledge her for including this healthier option and looking forward to making this recipe! A low-oil diet decreases the load on your liver and is far better for your health. Of course it is all a matter of personal choice at the end of the day. So neither should you.

Just because we see things differently. And how about spinach instead of kale? I will make this tonight. I do want to say that your photos are among the best I have seen on the web.

Loved this recipe. I made the 6 servings but curious how many ounces is in each serving? This soup is giving off MAJOR fall and winter coziness! Looking forward to cooking this very soon!
