We use these compounds for energy to power our bodies. They may also be used to build new cell structures and machinery. Metabolism can be impacted by many factors, such as diet, genes, the environment, and daily activity.

Brown fat breaks down blood sugar glucose and fat molecules to create heat and help maintain body temperature. Cold temperatures activate brown fat, which leads to various metabolic changes in the body. Most of our fat, however, is white fat, which stores extra energy.

Too much white fat builds up in obesity. To gain a deeper understanding of how brown fat affects metabolism, a team led by Dr. Shingo Kajimura at the University of California, San Francisco, carefully analyzed blood levels of glucose, fats, and amino acids before and after activation of brown fat in 33 healthy young men average age about 23 years old.

Results were published online on August 21, , in Nature. Based on measurements taken at normal room temperature, the team classified 17 of the men as having high brown fat activity and 16 as low activity.

They then exposed the men to a temperature cold enough to activate their brown fat but not low enough to cause them to shiver for two hours. Unexpectedly, the team found that the men with high brown fat activity had reduced levels of compounds called branched chain amino acids BCAAs in their bloodstreams.

Experiments in obese mice confirmed that cold exposure reduced BCAAs in rodents with brown fat, too. BCAAs include three essential amino acids—valine, leucine, and isoleucine—that are important for many functions in the body.

Lack of sleep may also cause you to crave unhealthy foods And fatigue from lack of sleep leads to decreased output all day long and less intense workouts, meaning you are burning fewer calories than when fully energized.

Sleep can also influence nutrient utilization and fat storage. Poor sleep may alter how glucose is metabolized. And n ot sleeping enough may actually cause you to store more fat, putting a damper on your weight loss efforts Research suggests that most of us need at least 7 hours of uninterrupted quality sleep each night And playing catch-up on the weekends is not going to counteract the lack of sleep you got all week long.

Bottom line: While alterations in metabolism and hormone function are important, they don't necessarily correspond to the speed of your metabolism.

Regardless, getting enough quality sleep could be an effective approach to supporting better weight management and more fat loss. Similar to sleep, being in a constant state of stress can do a number on your hormones and how you metabolize your calories.

Chronic stress can lead to increased fat storage, mainly abdominal fat, from excess cortisol production 21 , 22 , Continued stress triggers a constant state of fight or flight, and when the energy released is not used, it can be stored as body fat.

High amounts of stress also tend to mean less sleep, leading to changes in appetite-regulating hormones Stress is also linked to poor diet from increased cravings and reduced willpower. Bottom line: Controlling stress may not make or break the speed of your metabolism, but can certainly help you process your calories more efficiently and manage your diet better overall.

Standing more and moving around more throughout the day can also increase your burn. No surprise here, since movement requires calories! For those that have a hard time getting daily exercise in, you may be able to burn a significant amount of calories just from staying lightly active all day.

In one study, those who stood during the day at work burned an additional calories In addition, those who tend to fidget more, tend to expend more energy. Fidgeting may also explain why some people appear to have a faster metabolism. Bottom line: While these efforts do not directly increase your metabolism, they can tip the calorie equation in your favor by helping you burn more calories throughout the day.

This is partly why caffeine is often used in popular fat-burning supplements. But additional research suggests that benefits may only be seen in certain populations, such as lean individuals, and that the overall effects, while significant, have little impact on weight loss overall 30 , 31 , Bottom line: Coffee and green tea might be a way to give your metabolism a little kick, and when included as part of a calorie controlled diet, may have some minor benefits for weight loss.

However, these benefits are not strong enough to outweigh the need for calorie control in the first place. Some popular trends like the apple cider vinegar diet, or including spicy foods like cayenne pepper have been touted as special fat-burning superfoods.

The mechanisms behind a majority of these claims are not well understood, but typically involve optimizing absorption and digestion rates or increasing RMR temporarily through thermogenesis 33 , And sometimes the positive effects are due to these foods decreasing appetite.

While there is research to suggest certain foods can create a minor uptick in metabolism after eating them, the effects are fairly minimal and short-lived.

In addition, the amount of these foods needed to produce significant effects are likely pretty high. Bottom line: No special food or diet will speed up your metabolism.

But this doesn't mean you should discount these foods altogether, especially if they can be included as part of a healthy diet. Just don't count on them melting fat away and igniting a fast burning metabolism on their own. Because digesting food requires calories, some believe that eating more frequently, can help keep your metabolism high.

This number remains fairly constant across the board no matter how many times you eat. In fact, you might end up eating more calories overall and gaining weight if you are eating more often.

Your body is excellent at compromising and tends to enjoy a state of homeostasis aka the status quo for you. There is no magic pill or secret to a fast metabolism. While metabolic processes and the human body can be complex, how your choices affect your metabolism for weight loss are pretty simple.

Eat fewer calories from food and burn more calories from exercise to lose body fat. How often you eat or even the types of food you eat don't outweigh this basic principle of your metabolism - calorie control.

Ingestion of carbohydrate in the hours before or on commencement of exercise reduces the rate of fat oxidation significantly compared with fasted conditions, whereas fasting longer than 6 h optimizes fat oxidation.

Fat oxidation rates have been shown to decrease after ingestion of high-fat diets, partly as a result of decreased glycogen stores and partly because of adaptations at the muscle level.

Abstract Interventions aimed at increasing fat metabolism could potentially reduce the symptoms of metabolic diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes and may have tremendous clinical relevance.

You rely on your metabolism to breathe, think, digest, circulate blood, keep warm in the cold, and stay cool in the heat. It is a common belief that raising your metabolism helps you burn more calorie.

Unfortunately, there are more myths about boosting metabolism than tactics that work. Some myths can backfire. If you think you are burning more calories than you actually are, you could end up eating more than you should.

It is true that you burn more calories when you exercise , especially when you get your heart rate up with activities like biking or swimming. That increased calorie burn lasts as long as your workout.

You might keep burning extra calories for an hour or so after that, but the aftereffects of exercise stop there. Once you stop moving, your metabolism will go back to its resting rate.

If you load up on calories after a workout, thinking your body will keep burning calories the rest of the day, you risk weight gain. What to do: Exercise for your health and refuel with healthy foods. Do not let exercise give you an excuse to overindulge in high-calorie foods and drinks.

Muscle burns more calories than fat. So will building more muscle not boost your metabolism? Yes, but only by a small amount. Most regular exercisers only gain a few pounds fewer kilograms of muscle. That is not enough to make a big difference in the number of calories you burn.

Plus, when not in active use, muscles burn very few calories. Most of the time, your brain, heart, kidneys, liver, and lungs account for most of your metabolism.

What to do: Lift weights for stronger bones and muscles. Funding for the study was provided by the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and American Diabetes Association.

Capsaicin is the chemical that puts the hot in jalapeños. In fact, a review of 20 research studies, published in Appetite , found that capsaicin can increase the amount of calories you burn by approximately 50 calories a day.

Those calories can add up over time, contributing to long-term weight loss. So consider spicing it up in your kitchen! L-carnitine is a substance that helps your body turn fat into energy. While your body produces it in your liver and kidneys, you can also find it in meat, dairy products, nuts, and legumes.

L-carnitine may be helpful for treating a number of conditions, including heart disease, peripheral artery disease, and diabetic neuropathy. But its use as a dietary supplement for weight loss is questionable. One study reported in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that L-carnitine might provide some anti-obesity benefits.

But more research is needed to assess the benefits and risks of taking L-carnitine supplements for weight loss. According to the Office of Dietary Supplements , taking too much of it can cause potentially dangerous side effects.

Chromium is a mineral that your body uses in small amounts. Chromium picolinate supplements are useful for people who have a chromium deficiency. So far, researchers have given it a thumbs-down. A pilot study reported in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that chromium picolinate supplements had no effect on weight loss.

As with many supplements, research on CLA has found mixed results. A review of studies published in the European Journal of Nutrition found evidence that CLA may promote weight loss and fat loss, but the effects were small and uncertain.

Gastrointestinal problems and fatigue are common side effects of taking CLA supplements, so you may want to pass on this one.

Numerous studies have been conducted on the effectiveness of green tea for weight loss. Few have reported significant results. One study published in Physiology and Behavior does suggest that catechins and caffeine found in green tea may help support weight maintenance.

Resveratrol is a substance found in the skin of red grapes, mulberries, Japanese knotweed, and peanuts. Studies suggest it does burn fat in rats. More clinical trials are needed. Despite the hype, supplements that are promoted as fat busters and metabolism boosters rarely have a significant effect on weight loss.

If you want to shed excess pounds, cutting calories from your diet and exercising more regularly are probably your best bets. Ask your doctor for more advice on losing weight in safe and sustainable ways. And talk to them before trying any weight loss medications or supplements.

Eating a healthful diet is essential for regulating metabolism. Other ways to boost metabolic function include:. According to one small-scale study , drinking an extra 1, milliliters ml of water daily can decrease body weight and BMI in some people who are overweight.

Participants drank ml before each meal. The researchers suggest that this is due to water-induced thermogenesis, where water increases metabolism.

Research suggests that a lack of sleep may be contributing to the trend of increasing obesity and diabetes, which are consequences of metabolic syndrome. According to the CDC , adults should aim to sleep for 7 to 9 hours a night. To improve sleep patterns, try to go to bed and get up at the same time each day.

One of the benefits of less stress is a better metabolism: Research suggests that when you're stressed out, your metabolism stalls. There are a few possible reasons for this, but one is that chronic stress stimulates the production of betatrophin, a protein that inhibits an enzyme needed to break down fat.

De-stressing may not always be easy, but it can be achievable in some cases. You can reduce stress by doing something that you enjoy but also find relaxing, like reading a book or taking a walk. Research has found that sleep is important for regulating your metabolism.

One study's findings indicated that, after a few days of sleep deprivation , study participants felt less full after eating and metabolized the fat in their food differently. While getting enough sleep isn't exactly a boost to your metabolism, it can keep you from experiencing weight gain.

It's recommended that adults get at least seven hours of sleep a night. If you're having a hard time hitting seven hours a night, try getting into new bedtime habits that will help you get a full night of sleep. Your metabolism can be affected by different factors, but it's possible to boost it.
