For the first 6 months, babies can get all the protein they need through breastmilk or formula. Once solids are introduced, protein-rich foods such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, legumes and dairy products such as milk and yoghurt should be included in their diet.

Meat, eggs and legumes are also good sources of iron which is an important nutrient for babies as they have high iron requirements.

Seeds such as chia seeds and sesame seeds — 3g per tablespoon. However, there is some evidence that for children up to the age of 24 months, too much animal and dairy protein can increase the risk of becoming overweight or obese later in life.

It is thought that something in dairy increases the secretion of a hormone called insulin-like-growth-factor, which drives rapid growth and is strongly associated with overweight and obesity in childhood.

However, more research is needed to determine exactly why this link exists. Most young children get the majority of their protein from dairy foods, such as milk and yoghurt.
