Resveratrol and gut health -

Altogether, these studies show the potential for resveratrol to have beneficial effects on human health by modifying the gut environment. It can change the relative numbers of different bacteria in the gut.

It affects the compounds that the gut microbiome makes, and it helps the large intestine to function properly. Research, still in its early days, shows promise for further effects of resveratrol on the gut microbiome.

A new study has shown that, after a four-week daily high dose intervention, fish oils, fish oil ethyl esters and krill oil have almost the same bioavailability in red blood cells and plasma when levels of EPA and DHA are matched.

There was no evidence that the high phospholipid content or antioxidant content of krill oil improved the bioavailability of EPA and DHA. A diet high in sodium, when combined with little exercise, may be detrimental to cognitive performance, suggests a new Canadian study.

Researchers from the Third Military Medical University in China focused their attention on a compound called trimethylamine-N-oxide TMAO , which is reportedly a novel and independent risk factor for atherosclerosis.

TMAO is produced by specific microorganisms in the gut, which metabolize dietary choline to trimethylamine TMA , and then liver enzymes complete the conversion to TMAO. Because of the role of the gut microbiota in the production of TMAO, studies have successfully investigated the potential of antibiotics to attenuate TMAO production and atherosclerosis development.

However, the potential side effects and development of antibiotic resistance has stifled efforts. Resveratrol, a powerful polyphenol and anti-fungal chemical, is often touted as the bioactive compound in grapes and red wine, and has been associated with the so-called 'French Paradox': The phrase was coined in by Dr Serge Renaud from Bordeaux University to describe the low incidence of heart disease and obesity among the French, despite their relatively high-fat diet and levels of wine consumption.

The Chinese researchers used lab mice with an increased risk of developing atherosclerosis. Animals were fed standard mouse chow with or without supplemental resveratrol 0. At the end of the study, the animals were given doses of choline or TMA.

Results showed that TMAO levels did not increase in animals in the resveratrol group given either choline or TMA, whereas levels did increase in the standard chew-fed control animals. In addition, TMA and TMAO levels were significantly lower in the resveratrol fed animals after the choline dose.

These effects were accompanied by changes in the gut microbiota of the resveratrol-fed animals, said the researchers. Chen, et al. Show more. Kaneka Ubiquinol Recorded the Nov Webinar.

Abd Resveratrol and gut health necessitates further healt on profiling and characterizing eRsveratrol biotransformation of RES, as its metabolites may contribute profound biological effects. Importantly, DHR, LUN, and their conjugates were much more abundantly distributed in tissues, gastrointestinal tract GITand biological fluids compared to RES and its conjugates. Moreover, we established that DHR and LUN were gut bacteria-derived metabolites of RES, as indicated by their depletion in antibiotic-treated mice. Furthermore, the biological activities of RES, DHR, and LUN were determined at physiologically relevant levels. DHR and LUN exhibited stronger anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects than RES at the concentrations found in mouse tissues. NUTRI-FACTS covered the basics of the gut microbiome in a recent Topic of the Month. An important concept in how we can use the gut microbiome to improve health is changing the relative numbers of different types of bacteria. A second way, the prebiotic approach, is to make changes to the diet to encourage or discourage the growth of certain bacteria. Resveratrol and gut health
