If you can, start the meal plan on a Sunday. The plan has been designed for you to swap meals to suit your family commitments. All recipes have a minimum amount of hands-on time peeling and chopping , and you can reduce prep time even more by using frozen chopped veg.

Most of the recipes can be frozen, too. You can season to taste, but remember that children have lower requirements. Be wary, however: the recommended daily salt intake for ages is 2g, for is 3g and 5g for year olds.

I keep my grocery list on my phone and organize it based on the layout of the supermarkets I frequent the most. Making a list also helps avoid those impulse buys just because something looks good or is on sale. Meal prep. Meal planning and meal prepping are two separate processes and you need to set aside time for both of them.

Once you have your menu in place, sit down with the recipes and make a prep list for each one. Write down what needs to be done with every ingredient and how far in advance you can do the prep.

Take stock. It is the best way to avoid food waste and make sure we use up the ingredients we have on hand before buying something new. Plus, some of the best meals in our house are what I call pantry meals. Put together some combination of whole grain pasta, canned beans, canned fish, a jar of tomato sauce, and some veggies and dinner is done.

For example, my Nicoise Pasta Salad and Lentil Chickpea Vegetable Salad with Feta are made up of mostly pantry, fridge, and freezer staples.

Cook in bulk. One of the benefits of thinking ahead and planning your meals is that you can make extra of a recipe, so you have enough for leftovers another night or to freeze for a busy week. Some of my favorite types of recipes to double or triple and freeze are homemade tomato sauce , soups and stews , meatballs, and burgers.

The little bit of extra time it takes on that day of cooking is more than made up for when I have a defrosted meal on the table in no time. These come in handy for breakfast on rushed mornings and school lunch boxes. Make one meal. Not a separate meal for each child, not one meal for adults and one meal for the kids.

One meal period. This tip will not only help you with meal planning, but also in helping your children learn to eat a well-rounded diet and put an end to picky eating. I promise your children will not starve!

Take a night off. Monday through Friday are the main days of the week that I cook from scratch, with weekend meals consisting of leftovers, one adult night out for my husband and me, and a dinner out as a family.

Cooking is time consuming and as much as I love being in the kitchen and making my own meals, everyone needs a break. Nights off are a great time to use some of those batch-cooked meals you froze, serve some breakfast for dinner, use up leftovers, or splurge on take-out.

I keep some cookbooks handy and try to include two new meals every month — I usually add them on a less-busy night because new recipes usually take more time and focus. You can borrow cookbooks from the library or purchase one or two a year for some fresh ideas.

The Weeknight Dinner Cookbook is a book I purchased last year. If I write meals from cookbooks in my meal plan, I use parentheses to remind me which cookbook they came from. Overall, I find creating a monthly meal plan well worth it. It keeps my evenings calmer and more predictable so I can save my energy for the important things, like fighting over homework and making kids take showers and clip toenails.

This is easy to miss, especially if you're shopping in store. When you look at the fine print, you often see that even though the item is advertised as "on sale," if you don't have that digital coupon clipped, the price can be a lot more expensive!

Unless it's something that I'm unable to use due to the peanut allergy, an item I absolutely love or if a different brand is on sale , store brand it is. Feeding kids is a challenge. They change their minds constantly, and they seemingly get new taste buds every meal.

When I ask them to help pick out recipes usually with them looking at pictures , I find that they are more excited to eat them.

No matter what your budget, dietary needs, or family size, the main takeaway I'd love to offer is simply how a bit of planning and organization can really help set you up for success when it comes to getting food on the table. The previous week I shopped on Sunday and a lot of my items were out of stock and needed replacements.

My husband suggested I shop on a weekday instead and it was a success! Not a single replacement needed! Unheard of. Produce: Onions, garlic, spinach, green pepper, red pepper, yellow pepper, parsley, lemon, dill, corn, green onions, cilantro, green beans, mushrooms, carrots, broccoli, snap peas, celery, apples, blueberries.

Dairy : Cottage cheese, heavy whipping cream, parmesan, mozzarella, cheddar, feta, sour cream, milk. Meat: Italian sausage, roast beef, ground beef, chicken thighs. Pantry : Orzo, chicken broth, gravy mix, rolls, mayo, panko breadcrumbs, potato chips, roasted red peppers, enchilada sauce, black beans, apple cider vinegar, honey, rice, flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, brown sugar, yeast, oats, jam.

Misc: Eggs, frozen tortellini, frozen meatballs. When I choose delivery, my order is fulfilled through Instacart. I prefer this option because if anything needs a substitution or an item is out of stock, the shopper immediately texts me with pictures and possible replacements for that item.

The recipe calls for baby spinach, but in order to use my money efficiently, I bought a bunch of regular spinach. After browning the beef, I added chicken broth and heavy cream.

I also weighed out the portion of orzo I would need. I always measure my ingredients to the exact specifications a recipe calls for. This typically ends up providing me with leftover ingredients that I can repurpose. This week, my plan included two different recipes that used orzo for the week.

I was happy I listened to my instinct with the spinach, because I had to pick through it quite a bit. The flavors of this recipe reminded me of my favorite pasta Florentine dish from a restaurant where I waitressed in high school and college. The chef there always added sambuca, and I kept thinking that I would love that little addition the next time I made this recipe.

I knew my son wouldn't have enough time to eat everything in his lunchbox and there wasn't enough room to fit an entire apple, so I packed away the remaining slices for later. I also roughly chopped just a few blueberries so we could make a few plain and a few blueberry flavored.

We also ended up finding some fun sprinkles in the pantry, so we did a few "Halloween funfetti" ones as well. The idea of making a big stir fry on a sheet pan sounded very appealing to me. I also needed a recipe that was even quicker and easier than normal, because my daughter had a dance clinic right at 5 p.

I must have missed adding in a bell pepper in the grocery order, because the recipe calls for two. However, after all was said and done, I don't think it really mattered. I'm definitely not a perfect parent, so some days, we also need to have a learning lesson from Daniel Tiger about how we don't hit our sister.

My kids absolutely love oatmeal with just a bit of brown sugar and sometimes a splash of milk. I think its just as easy as a bowl of cereal, but will stick with them a bit longer! I also find that my patience and mental space is better when we start our days outside as well.

Even though a lot of times it ends with me carrying a variety of locomotive toys on the way home. Having a lunchbox with a thermal area is such a game changer and provides the possibility of so many more options!

I've tried a few bread recipes and often change it up, but today I decided to try this white bread recipe. As we were heading out the door, I put the dough in a bowl and set it to proof for 45 minutes.

This bread ended up proofing for much longer, as we were at the playground much longer, but it all worked out just fine.

Now, if you scroll alllllll the way to the bottom of the recipe , it will state that some people said that this was too big for one large loaf. I would say I had the same result, but I decided to live on the wild side and go with it anyway.

I weighed out the ingredients, and while I boiled the tortellini for 2—3 minutes, I added all the other ingredients into the skillet.

By this point I was already starting to get a little nervous about my menu plan lasting for the entire week. Now you may be thinking to yourself, why did I plan to do potty training this week of all weeks?

Why haven't I been working on this before? The answer is: I have. And if you don't know my toddler in real life, then I'm sure you know some other toddler with the stubbornness of a bull. Meaning, I was not about to let this sudden opportunity pass us by.

I let everyone just pick their own thing. We didn't have enough leftovers of one meal for everyone to have — so we just worked with what we had. I used to think that my kids would just need to learn to eat the apple peels, but after continually picking up minuscule bites of apple peel spit out onto my floor all the time, I succumbed to the fact that cutting the peel off is way easier than cleaning little apple shreds one more time.

Now I didn't have all the ingredients for this specific recipe, but I just needed to work with what I had. I had never made gnocchi in my life, but I never back down from a little challenge. I then used the potato and created a dough. At this point I was thinking: wow, this honestly is such an easy thing to make!

I wasn't able to get the technique down for creating the nice ridges in the dough, so I just decided to keep it plain. One mistake I made was cutting all the pieces and then storing them in the fridge until I was ready to cook.

I should have kept everything in the larger dough ball to cut immediately before cooking. When I took the bowl of gnocchi dough out, the ones on the bottom had become flat and stuck together.

My preference would be bread WITH yeast, but this was a decent substitute when trying to make things work! The biggest thing I've learned when cooking for my family is that things don't always need to be perfect.

I'm not cooking for an Iron Chef and everyone has to learn at some point. You can make these in the oven or the air fryer. The dough does get quite sticky so one trick I always use is to spritz my hands with oil so it doesn't stick. My daughter loves these dry erase activity books.

They are perfect when you need calmer activities to do. And let me tell you, nothing makes you come to the realization that you need to keep your knives sharp like when you're trying to cut through a fresh corn cob.

However, we can always figure out SOMETHING! I pulled out the remaining chicken I had put into the freezer earlier in the week. I also made air fryer carrot fries.

When it comes to the air fryer, I wouldn't say I'm a particularly patient person. However, the more I use it the more I really learn that if you want your food to come out nice and crispy, not overcrowding the basket is KEY.

His request did come before I cooked my eggs in the morning, so if you're thinking that was convenient planning, it was, in fact, planned. Spoiler: he hated it! My younger two actually really liked it so it wasn't a complete bust.
