By working with farmers, ranchers and female business owners across the world, Heifer gives families and communities opportunities to earn living incomes and build more resilient futures. COVID disrupted food systems across the globe, including here in the U. While we were in lockdown, the pandemic revealed major gaps in our food system.

We saw food banks face a shortage of supplies while farmers were forced to destroy their harvests. Heifer USA, a flagship project of Heifer International, stepped in to support small-scale farmers and work with them to build a better system for both farmers and consumers.

Heifer donated thousands of pounds of nutritious food to foodbanks, offered employment opportunities to food service workers who had lost their jobs, and integrated more small farms into their value-chain system. Following their traditional model, Heifer has supported small-scale farmers across the country helping them to deliver fresh, nutritious food, connect with reliable markets and provide training, education and resources to help them navigate the market and secure fair prices for their products.

Rise Against Hunger : Integrating environmental sustainability during times of a climate crisis Through nourishing lives, empowering communities and responding to emergencies, Rise Against Hunger is striving to make an impact on hunger for millions around the globe.

Climate change is one of the leading factors affecting hunger and impacts low-income communities most. An increase in natural disasters, unpredictable weather patterns and more extreme temperatures is disrupting our food systems, affecting harvests and planting seasons, and decreasing availability of produce and supplies.

Not taking the environment into consideration when looking at food production and distribution models is harmful to the world, and especially, vulnerable communities.

Rise Against Hunger is working with partners and communities around the world to integrate environmentally sustainable practices into their food security projects.

In India, Rise Against Hunger works with smallholder farmers in millet production, creating a more sustainable process. Millet, a climate-friendly and nutritious grain that requires little water, is an ideal product for the drought-ridden region, and they have been able to improve the soil by using organic fertilizer methods like composting with worms.

They learn water management practices, ways to reduce soil erosion, and tactics to protect their crops like mulching and selecting sustainable seeds for crops. Their work lays the foundation to more prosperous and stable futures for communities by supporting them in building resilience, adapting to climate change, promoting good nutrition, and improving food systems.

As the conflict in Ukraine unfolded, WFP launched emergency operations to provide food assistance for those affected, whether they have been forced to flee their homes and take refuge in neighboring countries or have been unable to evacuate and are forced to shelter in locations throughout the country.

WFP teams are on the ground in Kyiv, Ukraine and neighboring countries leading the emergency efforts on behalf of the U. They have been able to reach 1. But the challenges continue to mount.

In Ukraine, the current systems that have been feeding those still in the country have fallen apart, and local production is disrupted. Fuel shortages and scarcity of drivers and trucks are limiting the ability of farmers to deliver their produce to the markets.

Major Ukraine ports, airports and railways have also been closed or are under threat, limiting activity. These damages to the food systems will have a dramatic impact on food costs, shipping costs, oil and fuel, which will simultaneously increase operational costs for WFP, constraining its response at a time when people need it most.

Howeveras it always has, WFP will be ready to step up to deliver lifesaving food to children and families around the world.

How WFP Works in Humanitarian Emergencies

Hundreds of thousands of people are on the move to try and find food and water—with many not surviving the journey. In Somalia alone, over half a million people have already fled their homes since the start of Without action to help people already dying of hunger, the country could soon see mass death.

Across East Africa, extreme hunger is on the rise. The region is entering a fifth consecutive season without enough rainfall. The drought has even surpassed the failed rains of the famine, which killed over , people. The situation has been steadily deteriorating for two years, despite repeated warnings.

The lives of millions of people are at stake without urgent attention. More people will become displaced, more will go hungry and more will die of hunger and thirst.

Famines are not common. So what does the declaration of a famine mean and what can we do to help? A famine is declared when a certain set of conditions have been met. That means that, by the time a famine is declared, children are already starting to die because their parents cannot give them enough food to survive.

That is why immediate action is needed in Somalia and the rest of East Africa to avoid mass deaths. Famines are caused by multiple factors including conflict and climate.

A famine is not a natural disaster but a result of human actions or lack of action to prevent it. They do not happen overnight; they develop over time until they cause massive harm and suffering. There are many factors causing the catastrophe unfolding in East Africa. For one, the region is suffering from a La-Niña-induced drought from four consecutive failed or below-average rainy seasons.

Droughts occur every few years in East Africa. Because of climate change, they are becoming even more frequent. These are the driest conditions with the highest temperatures in the region for more than 40 years. In addition, COVID and the consequences of the war in Ukraine are pushing East Africa into catastrophe.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification IPC describes the severity of food emergencies. The five-phase scale acts as a warning system for governments and humanitarian organizations to take action.

The IPC grades a crisis in five levels, with the most severe being famine:. Three conditions need to be met before it declares a level 5 famine:. Famine is more than just hunger. The effects can last a lifetime.

Malnutrition rates in Somalia have doubled since the start of the year. In Kenya, they have increased by 75 percent. Malnutrition itself is already deadly, especially in infants and young children. Children are particularly affected because they are still growing.

The majority of those at risk of death are children, whether they are dying from starvation or from preventable diseases that their weakened bodies cannot fight off. The children who do survive will live with the consequences for the rest of their lives.

Their growth will be stunted and they will be at greater risk of dying from future illnesses. They also tend to have a higher risk of having underweight or premature children, passing on these consequences to future generations. Global threats like terrorism grow out of poverty and political and economic instability.

Conflict spreads in famine areas and other places where food and resources are scarce. People are displaced from their homes and lose their means of earning a living: This lack of opportunity is fodder for terrorist recruitment.

The international community helped avoid famine in East Africa in because it took early action. It is not doing so now. What is the proper management of food supplies?

The objective is to ensure safety and prevent the transmission of disease through food. It is necessary to inspect the food received; identify and discard damaged supplies and confirm that containers or grain sacks are in good condition.

Discard tins that are bulging, broken, or rusted, and reject products whose expiration date has passed. Verify that transportation units have not been used to transport hazardous or contaminating products. Make sure that warehouses have good ventilation and light, and that the food is placed on stands which allow air to circulate freely.

Feeding Disaster Victims How do we ensure an appropriate diet, given the circumstances? As an immediate measure, provide any population group that is or appears to be at high nutritional risk with 3 or 4 kg of food per person per week.

The important thing at this stage is to provide a sufficient quantity of energy, even if it is not a balanced diet. For a short period of time Kcal daily will prevent severe deterioration of the nutritional status, and famine. How are food aid rations to be calculated?

The food should be part of the food pattern of the population. The quantity of food in a ration should depend on the stage of the crisis and on available resources. What factors should be considered when preparing rations? The food ration should be as simple as possible: a basic food e. rice, corn, wheat flour , a concentrated source of energy, oil or another fat and a concentrated source of protein e.

dried or canned fish or canned meat. Although dried vegetables are an excellent source of protein, is necessary to take cooking difficulties into account.

Along with the basic ration, vulnerable groups children under 5, pregnant and breast-feeding women, and malnourished persons need to receive a supplement.

How can we estimate the medium-term needs for food, based on food rations? Take into account the effect of the disaster on harvests, livestock, and environmental factors extensive damming, mudslides, avalanches, volcanic ashfalls, etc.

Approximate number and composition of the affected population. If the victims are in shelters, without the ability to cook their meals, food must be distributed already cooked.

Raw rations "dry" are to be given preferably by family over a certain period of time e. for a week. Composition of a food ration that provides approximately Kcal: Basic grain e. dried fish 45g Simple arithmetic will yield the food needs for a family of five, a population of , per day, per month, etc.

What is the role of PAHO in food aid programs after disasters? Collaborate with national and local authorities in priority activities. Collaborate with relevant agencies and organizations, and organize a coordinating group if there is none.

Identify sources of supply. Provide experienced personnel.

It is not doing so now. Millions of dollars are needed immediately, so the entire humanitarian response can scale up massively. Delaying action until a famine is officially declared is morally wrong and guarantees that any response will be inadequate.

Every day of delay will cause suffering to grow. Global leaders must prioritize ending the hunger crisis. Famines are always predictable and preventable. We know that getting aid into the right hands can save millions of lives. But, we also must tackle the root causes of the problem, including conflicts around the world.
