Cool Down and Hydrate -

If you need a little flavor to drink more water, try adding some fruit, like lemon, orange or strawberry slices to your bottle. Or, check out some of these popular, all-natural flavorings that you can find at most grocery stores.

It's like making homemade popsicles! If you make them in ice trays, you can add them to your water, too! Taking multiple cold showers or baths during the day not only helps to relieve the heat and humidity of the summer temporarily, but it leaves you feeling clean and fresh instead of fatigued.

Or, take a dip in a pool or lake - whatever you have available! If submersing yourself in water isn't doable, try laying some wet rags around your main arteries, like your neck, underarms and thighs. You could also soak your feet or hands in cold water. Prolonged sun exposure can cause health problems like heat strokes.

Avoid staying too long in the sun, and when exposed to sunlight, use sunscreen or cover yourself with clothing to protect your skin from sunburns and prevent overheating. These illnesses occur as the result of a combination of dehydration and the body overheating.

Get some place cool. Get out of the heat. Take off your extra clothes and rest to let your body cool down and get your heart rate back to normal. Cramps are an early sign that you might be pushing yourself too hard and to reign in your physical activity.

People suffering from heat exhaustion are still functioning, but their body is definitely overheated and we need to get them into a shady area and cool them down. If left untreated, heat exhaustion can escalate to heat stroke, which is a medical emergency and needs immediate care.

Heat stroke can even strike people who are not active, especially in the very young and elderly. Because of this, their temperature will go up very quickly and very high. Pouring water over the head is a tactic you do see being used by athletes in all sorts of sports to try to combat extreme heat and it can be an effective way of cooling down your body.

We've discussed how much dehydration you are able to tolerate before your performance is affected before. On a personal level, I can vividly remember running in Maui in the Xterra World Champs many years ago with my head practically boiling under the harsh Hawaiian midday sun.

I ran past a chap spraying a hose pipe on his garden next to the course and begged him to turn it on me. He did and the relief I felt was fantastic and it certainly spurred me on and allowed me to keep pushing a little more than I might have done without it.
