So, how is body positivity growing? Via the internet, of course. To dig further into how exactly the internet is affecting the movement, I spoke with Naomi Finkelstein who runs social media for The Body Positivean organization dedicated to spreading body positivity awareness and educating the masses on what it means to be liberated from self-hatred.

People started putting their lives on the internet, and speaking from their experiences, and posting pictures of themselves. People in greater numbers saw themselves and their thoughts being reflected. According to Finkelstein, community is essential to body positivity.

Community is something I wish I had had when I was young and battling my feelings. Social media, while often feeding into the flurry of body image issues, has simultaneously created a space for people to connect who may not have a positive community at home.

As more people are able to share their experiences of learning to love and respect their bodies, the movement is given more credibility as well as a stronger voice.

After all, why be against self-love? My goal, now, is to remain the way I am: healthy, without the guilt of eating the occasional donut, and happy, without being swayed by the opinions of others. Why is it so hard to love our bodies? Start your free trial.

In a world obsessed with perfection, where appearance often takes center stage, how you see yourself can make or break your confidence. If you want to cultivate a more positive body image, learning to navigate these highs and lows is a crucial step forward.

Whether you're battling conflicting feelings or wanting to amplify your self-love, every inch of your body is worth celebrating. Your body image expresses the thoughts and feelings you have about your body, including both your perception of and attitude toward your physical appearance.

Body image issues often stem from influences like society, culture, personal experiences, and comparison to others. It's totally normal for your perception of your body to oscillate between positive and negative, sometimes feeling contentment and pride and other times feeling shame and dissatisfaction.

It's about how you perceive your appearance and how you feel about this perception, which may or may not align with your actual physical appearance. Instead, four components shape how you see, feel, think about, and react to your body:.

Perceptual body image is the mental picture you form of your appearance or how you see your body. You might form this from your reflection or photos of yourself. Affective body image is how you feel about your body and the emotions you associate with it.

It covers the range of feelings you may experience when considering your body, including happiness, apathy, and even disgust. Affective body image covers your overall satisfaction or dissatisfaction with your body, including your weight and specific features.

Cognitive body image is how you think about your body. In some cases, these beliefs true or untrue can overwhelm your thoughts, causing you to become preoccupied with certain aspects of your body.

A person might fixate on the idea that their nose is too big or that they're overweight or underweight, regardless of whether or not this is true. Behavioral body image covers the actions and behaviors you exhibit in response to your thoughts and feelings about your body.

People unsatisfied with their appearance may engage in harmful behaviors like risky cosmetic surgery, self-isolation, and drug abuse.

Being body positive — or having a positive body image — isn't necessarily about seeing your body as perfect. It's genuine respect and love for your body , even if you dislike certain parts.

People with positive body images see their bodies in a realistic light, not letting perceived flaws interrupt their overall self-worth and allowing them to retain high self-esteem.

They recognize their value beyond physical appearance, fostering self-confidence and empowerment. Body neutrality emphasizes taking a neutral stance toward your body and appreciating what it can do without attaching strong positive or negative emotions to your perception. Contrary to body positivity, this movement shifts from using explicit positive language and affirmations to viewing your body through a lens of function rather than aesthetics, such as appreciating your legs for allowing you to run instead of criticizing your thighs for being too large.

The central aim of body neutrality is to lessen the mental energy you spend thinking about your appearance. In the broader context of body image, this mindset is a valuable stepping stone for transitioning from a negative to a more realistic perception of your body.

Body image plays a pivotal role in your mental well-being, at times determining whether you feel confident enough to enjoy the activities you love, like socializing or working out.

Luckily, while combating society's unrealistic and often unhealthy beauty standards is a tall order, these five strategies might help you improve your body image.

This means that when you have negative thoughts about your body, you bolster this negative narrative. To combat this, you can embrace positive self-talk, replacing negative thoughts with positive ones while trying to talk to yourself as you would a friend.

This can help transform your internal dialogue. In today's digital age, it's easy to fall prey to comparison, the thief of joy. But when you start comparing your appearance to people you see online, remember that you're seeing a snapshot of curated, edited-for-Instagram moments.

We often talk negatively about ourselves, and this can lead us down a path of self-doubt. Try taking a little time each day to reflect on the things you like about yourself or your appearance. The goal of positive self-talk is to increase your self-esteem and confidence over time.

Getting in touch with how you feel about your body and telling yourself something positive each day, makes it easier to change the way you view yourself. If practicing positive-self talk is hard for you at first or feels awkward, try talking to yourself like you would to a good friend.

Tell yourself the words you wish someone else would say to you. Mirror work is a tool used to promote body acceptance. Start by standing in front of a mirror and describe what you see. It may be uncomfortable at first, and you may think more negatively about it than positively.

Keep positive affirmations in mind, and pay attention to your self-talk. It's common for people to deflect compliments because it can feel awkward receiving one, especially if you don't agree with them.

The next time someone compliments you, even if you disagree, thank them and allow yourself to feel affirmed. The people you surround yourself with can affect your mood and mental health.
