The most inexpensive method of measuring body fat is skinfold thickness measurements. This is done by a trained individual using a skinfold caliper that pinches the thickness of fat at certain body points.

However, depending on the calipers and the person measuring, the results can vary. Other methods of measuring body composition are: underwater weighing, dual X-ray absorptiometry DEXAbiometrical impedance monitor, and ultrasound.

All clients will come with their own unique goals they wish to accomplish, from bettering their health all the way to making themselves feel better.

There are many assessments that a nutrition coach can perform, and these will oftentimes work to help with building rapport with their clientele.

These begin the process of collecting data and start with the basic information like the address, contact info, emergency contact, and the initial starting goal ideas for the clients. The assessments here will look at objective data like height, weight, body composition, circumference measures, and skinfold measurements.

Exercise history questionnaires are useful here to see the current sports, frequency of activity, and fitness levels.

Behavioral assessments are within the scope of practice for nutrition coaches, and some examples of this would include looking at the nutrition behaviors and nutrition diaries. We can use things like client dietary worksheets, 3-day diet records, and other similar forms to find this information.

This information allows the stages of the change model to be used and the actual stage the client is in to be determined. The contemplation stage is when the client is aware of the need for change but has barriers to overcome.

The action stage is when someone takes the necessary steps to address and change their behaviors. The maintenance stage is when someone continues to do what is needed for them to keep going with their desired behavior.

This is done periodically and is required to measure progress and understand plateaus. Oftentimes a client should reassess with the use of nutrition diaries, physical assessments, and photos.

Goal setting is the process of establishing what someone wants to achieve and measuring timelines for doing it. All content published on PTPioneer is checked and reviewed extensively by our staff of experienced personal trainers, nutrition coaches, and other Fitness Experts.

Some health and fitness researchers and practitioners call this the gold standard caliper or at least the most prestigious. Studies have compared the Lange and Harpenden calipers and found the results were similar, both calipers being able to accurately measure body fat without error due to caliper design.

Researchers have noted in these comparison studies that both the Lange and Harpenden tended to under-predict body fat when compared to Hydrostatic weighing. As a pro-grade caliper, this one has a hefty price tag considering there's no computer in it. I have to admit, these do look a bit like "vice grips of death.

then hearing the news about your test results might be "painful". Now we're getting into the consumer-grade calipers and the price difference is so drastic, you'll see why these calipers are called "consumer grade. Construction is one reason for the bargain price - this caliper is made out of all plastic with a metal spring for the proper caliper grip tension.

Years ago, I did my own little "study' and I tested a few subjects with the Skyndex, Lange and Slimguide calipers back to back.

I found the measurements provided by this caliper astonishingly consistent with the much pricier Skyndex or the Lange calipers.

Even if the results aren't as high in absolute accuracy, as long as you can continue to get consistent measurements from week to week, that's what matters most and these calipers do a fine job at that. These calipers are ideal for personal use if you are testing other people at multiple skinfold sites such as with the Jackson Pollock or Durnin Formula or if someone else will be testing you at home.

Click Here for the Slimguide Body Fat Caliper at Amazon. So far you've heard about calipers that are designed for use by fitness professionals or which at least require another person to measure you as in the case of the Slimguide.

Just to be clear, it's possible to measure your own abdominal, iliac, bicep and thigh skin fold, but it's ideal to have someone else measure at those sites for you. When you get to a skinfold like the tricep, it really gets hard to pinch yourself accurately.

And for the subscapular skin fold, which is on the upper back at the lower border of your scapula, you can't measure that one at all, unless you are some kind of human pretzel even then, not so accurate. What I'm saying is that until the Accu measure caliper came along, skin fold testing was a two-person project.

The AccuMeasure changed all that. This is an inexpensive caliper not only created for consumer use, it was specifically designed for self-testing at home. I was only partially joking earlier about the funny conversations I've had over body fat testing. Some clients are like, "No way in hell are you groping at my fat folds!

Fortunately, I suggested an alternative: Get a caliper so you can test yourself at home. Enter the Accu-Meausure. No second person "fat groper? The Accu-Measure is a one-site skinfold test - the only place you pinch is on your iliac crest above your hip bone which you can easily reach by yourself.

Unlike other calipers which use spring tension, the Accu-Measure uses a slide rule, which clicks into place when the caliper jaws have settled onto the skinfold. Like all body fat testing methods, this one is not without cons along with the pros.

When you test body fat at only one site on the body, it's possible you may be losing fat more rapidly at other sites, so you might show less progress than you're really making.

One thing I've noticed among very lean athletes and bodybuilders is that the illiac crest, where you do the Accu-measure pinch, can also get very very lean down to mm while other sites like the abdominal or upper back skinfolds are still rather large.

So for very lean individuals, there comes a point when Accu-measure may lose some of its usefulness and a multi-site test providing more data points more skinfold sites gives you better information. Some people also wonder if a little plastic gizmo like this could really be accurate. It's possible the margin for error is higher when you're testing yourself instead of having a pro test you, but practice makes perfect.

In addition, a study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found the Accu-Measure results comparable to the sum of three skinfolds taken by a professional grade caliper by an experienced tester.

Surprisingly, it's not uncommon for some fitness professionals to say, "Don't bother" with body fat testing or for practitioners to give up on it.

This is for a variety of reasons, the biggest one usually being concerns about accuracy and consistency. It's very true that skinfold testing is only accurate within a few percent and operator error can decrease the accuracy even more. The good news is that accuracy is not nearly as important as consistency over repeated measurements so you can chart your progress over time.

If you find a skilled tester, you're likely to get reasonably accurate and very consistent measurements, and with practice, you can master the self-pinching technique if you're testing yourself at home.

Standardized procedures must be followed every time if you want consistent readings. Some people argue that body fat testing is simply not necessary because, while progress should be monitored, it's not mandatory to do so with body fat calipers. This is also true. At the very least, you should monitor the following:.

Your appearance in the mirror or with photos 2. Your total body weight 3. Your waist measurement 4. Move arms back into a rested position by their side, and take a measurement 2cm below the inferior angle, with a skinfold running diagonally up towards their head.

There is a lot of debate over the best method to measure bodyfat percentage. Skinfold measurements can differ if the site measured changes slightly, or the person taking the measurements changes. For this reason, consistency in collecting measurements is the most important part.

So rather than get hung up on the absolute numbers, it is worth focusing on changes seen each time you measure!

Females typically will have higher body fat percentages than males, which is due to hormonal differences. Females naturally require higher levels of body fat for childbearing. While body fat percentage is not a direct indicator of good health and dropping too low can be detrimental , tracking your progress is a good way to measure improvement towards your goals.

There are many other ways of assessing body fat percentage , including bio-electrical impedance, which sends electrical signals through your body and can differentiate between muscle and fat tissue. Other methods include underwater weighing and DEXA scans, and all have advantages and disadvantages, whether it be accuracy or cost.

The key is to be consistent in your methods, and track whether the values are increasing or decreasing rather than worrying about absolute values.

While there are several methods to measuring body fat, they vary greatly in cost, convenience, and accessibility. Using skin fold callipers is the best way to get a quick reading without any expensive equipment or even help from a health care professional.

No matter which method you choose, measuring body fat is a great way to stay on track with your goals.

Body fat measurements can help you track changes in body composition with greater detail than using weight measurements alone. Body fat callipers are a relatively inexpensive way to measure body fat percentage.

You can use the 3-site or 7-site method, depending on personal preference. The key is in consistency, so be prepared to identify sites with a tape measure to get the most repeatable measures of body fat percentage each time you measure. British J of Nutrition, p

The skinfold method uses specially designed calipers to measure the thickness of skinfolds that are pinched from several specific locations on the body, as seen in this skinfold demonstration video [1].

The skinfold thicknesses are correlated with body fat percentage using tables or equations that were produced by making both displacement and skinfold body composition measurements on many people [2]. The skinfold method is quick, easy, and requires minimal equipment, however there are many possible ways for error to enter the measurement.

Analyzing the skinfold method will help us understand the concepts of error, precision, accuracy, and uncertainty, which actually apply to all measurements. Watching the short skinfold demonstration video will help you follow the discussion of these concepts.

The result might not be very accurate , or close to the actual value, for a variety of reasons. For example, measuring above or below the center of the skinfold would produce a measurement error that would affect the accuracy of the results.

The PT could then make many measurements of each skinfold. If the collection of measurements were all relatively close together then the measurement would have high precision. On the other hand if the measurements were all relatively far apart then the measurement would have low precision.

For example, the PT might draw a mark on the skin to be sure the measurement is made in the same place every time. A caliper with larger dial will make it easier to see which mark is closest to the needle position. For example, if the PT happens to randomly measure at various distances above or below the actual skinfold center in equal amounts then this error is random.

In this case averaging all of the measurements should give a result that is relatively close to the actual value.

The effect of a random error on the accuracy can be reduced by averaging more measurements. These instructions will help you perform a three-site Jackson and Pollock skinfold test using any inexpensive body fat calipers.

You may scoff at using inexpensive plastic calipers rather than more expensive varieties you see trainers using in gyms, but you shouldn't.

I have performed more than 15, body fat measurements using a wide range of methods and I can attest that these simple tools and the following method are consistent with more complicated seven-site and nine-site testing. When taking a skinfold, the basic idea is to "pinch and pull. The sites used to determine body fat are usually identified by bony markings or body parts that are consistent between people, like a nipple or navel.

This enables you to accurately find a specific point on the body no matter your overall body composition, and find the same point again on anyone else. When you first start, I recommended that you use measuring tape to find the exact point you need, marking the spot with a felt-tip pen.

As you become more practiced, you will be able to ditch the extra tools. Imagine a vertical line running straight down through your right nipple.

This reference point is called the "midaxillary line. Pinch that spot diagonally, or have your helper do it. Make a vertical fold one inch to the right of your navel. If you have trouble getting a consistent vertical fold, it's OK to use a horizontal fold instead.

There isn't much of a difference, but you should note if you do something different from normal and use that method in the future to stay consistent. Find the midpoint between the hip and the knee and use a vertical fold.

Unless you take out measuring tape and a marker for precise measuring, I recommend using your hand to measure rather than eyeballing it. For instance, I use the distance between the tip of my thumb and pinky from the top of the knee, which for most people is fairly close to the midpoint.

Since I do it that way every time, I'm able to be consistent. Find the midpoint between the acromion process the bony knob on top of your shoulder and the point of the elbow.

You'll need a helper for this. Use a vertical fold. This site is found below the armpit at the top ridge of your hip bone, called the iliac crest or suprailiac, taken on the side.

Gently press the area and find the ridge of the hip, going just above the bone. Measure using a diagonal fold. As with men, use the midpoint between the hip and the knee. As I mentioned, I normally use the distance between the tip of my thumb and pinky from the top of the knee, which is fairly close to the midpoint for most people.

Measure using a vertical fold. Enter your skinfold measurements into our Body Fat Calculator to get your results! When people talk about wanting to lose weight, usually what they're really talking about is losing fat.

Ideally, when you lose weight, you'll lose as much fat as possible, and as little lean mass as possible. It can actually be good for you to gain weight in the form of lean mass muscle , since having more muscle actually helps you burn fat.

So a more accurate and practical goal than just losing weight would be instead to lower your body fat percentage, also known as changing your body composition—the ratio of fat mass to lean mass that makes up your body.

When you lower your body fat percentage, you'll end up looking more fit, whether you got there by losing fat, gaining muscle, or a combination of both. What constitutes a "healthy" level of body fat depends a lot on your sex and your goals. If you're not worried about keeping your body fat low for aesthetic or performance goals, then it's perfectly OK to have the goal of keeping your body fat percentage anywhere below "obese" and above "essential fat levels.

Measure out half way between the top of the kneecap proximal patella and the fold in the hip when the right leg is raised inguinal crease. Pinch to create a vertical fold in the skin. Measure mid-way between the bony part at the top of the shoulder acromion process , and the point of the elbow olecranon process.

Create a vertical pinch. Take a vertical line directly down from the front of the armpit, until you get to the top of the hipbone Iliac crest. From here, move up 2cm, and take a pinch that runs at a degree angle pointing down across the front of the body. As above, measure out half way between the top of the kneecap proximal patella and the fold in the hip when the right leg is raised inguinal crease.

Also, it relies on you obtaining measures in the exact same place each time, so there is greater variability. The first 5 sites are measured as above, and both males and females should obtain measurements in the same place. Ask subject to raise their right arm, and find the bottom of the sternum breastbone , then move horizontally until you are directly below the armpit.

Take a vertical fold and measure. Ask subject to move their arms behind their back, which allows you to identify the inferior angle of the scapula bottom of the shoulder blade. Move arms back into a rested position by their side, and take a measurement 2cm below the inferior angle, with a skinfold running diagonally up towards their head.
